Local authorities have made the decision to close the Babusar Top pass earlier than usual due to substantial snowfall. Although the closure is temporary, it underscores the difficulties presented by severe winter weather in this picturesque area. Deputy Commissioner Diamer Arif Ahmed has stated that the pass may be reopened once weather conditions improve and the snow is cleared.
Normal Closure Period
Under normal circumstances, Babusar Top remains closed for eight months, from November to June. However, the heavy snowfall this year has forced authorities to restrict road access earlier than the typical schedule.
Alternative Route
During this period, travelers can use the Karakoram Highway as an alternative route. The journey from Diamer to Mansehra via the Karakoram Highway takes 14 hours, significantly longer than the 7-hour route through Babusar Pass.
Tourists Affected
Recent heavy snowfall has left numerous tourists stranded, and local authorities have relocated them to Chilas City. Harsh weather conditions, with temperatures as low as -15 degrees Celsius, have made nighttime police duties impractical.
Security Concerns
The prolonged closure of the road is not only due to the heavy snow but also security concerns and slippery conditions. Tragically, a tourist from Punjab lost his life during a robbery attempt at Babusar Top. The assailants obstructed the road with large stones, leading the driver to reverse the car upon detecting danger. Regrettably, Mohammad Rashid, the victim, succumbed to gunshot wounds inflicted by the perpetrators.
