In a significant move to strengthen their bilateral relationship, Pakistan and Iraq have recently signed two crucial agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation. The agreements, announced by the foreign ministers of both nations, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Fuad Hussein, include a provision for visa-free travel for diplomatic and official passport holders. This development marks a notable milestone in the efforts to deepen ties and promote cultural collaboration between the two nations.

Pakistan’s foreign minister, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, embarked on a three-day visit to Baghdad to bolster the relationship between Pakistan and Iraq. During his visit, he expressed his determination to elevate the partnership, acknowledging the crucial role both countries play in promoting regional peace. Bhutto-Zardari also expressed his hopes of establishing a visitor center in the holy city of Karbala, further enhancing cultural and religious exchanges between the two nations.

Referring to Iraq as a true friend, Bhutto-Zardari reiterated his commitment to strengthening ties and expanding economic cooperation. He praised the joint efforts of Pakistan and Iraq in combating terrorism and emphasized the significance of defense cooperation in achieving shared objectives of peace, stability, and security.

Furthermore, the foreign minister emphasized the importance of people-to-people contact, aiming to facilitate increased interactions between various sectors such as private businesses, media, academia, and researchers. His Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, echoed the sentiment, confirming the strength of the bilateral relationship and highlighting ongoing discussions on defense cooperation.

Expressing gratitude, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari thanked Iraq for its support in opening a Pakistani consulate in Najaf. He emphasized the immense potential for expanded collaboration and expressed eagerness to enhance cooperation in critical areas such as water management, agriculture, defense, and trade.

During a meeting with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, both sides engaged in discussions on further enhancing cooperation. President Rashid expressed his keenness to improve relations with Pakistan, underscoring Iraq’s experience in countering extremism and terrorism. He also highlighted Iraq’s achievements in defeating terrorist groups and the government’s ongoing efforts towards stability, reconstruction, and addressing pressing challenges like drought and water scarcity.

Bhutto-Zardari also held talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, focusing on key areas such as boosting trade, establishing joint ministerial commissions, infrastructural development, improving connectivity, and facilitating visits by pilgrims. The objective was to foster increased contact and collaboration between people and businesses from both countries.
